8 QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR CAR DEALER

Heading to your local Mazda dealership for a new car but not quite sure what you need to ask? Use these helpful questions to make sure you get all the information you need before you drive away in your new car.

Is the car I want available?

You don’t want to waste your time and energy negotiating a deal to discover that the lot doesn’t have the model you are after in the right colour or with the features you’re after. Chances are the dealer might be able to get the car from another dealership for you, but this won’t be instantaneous. You may also not be able to get the same deal with this other dealer so it would be a shame to waste your time and effort negotiating a deal you won’t be able to keep.

What is the total cost of everything?

It’s important to ask for the total cost of the car, not just the retail price, otherwise you may be stung by hidden extras and fees such as sales tax, licensing and documentation fees or other charges.

Is that the best you can do?

You don’t need to settle for the first price you hear at a car dealership. Being prepared to negotiate with the dealer can really save you money on the price of your car. There’s no need to settle for a deal you’re not happy with if the dealer won’t budge either, especially if you’re happy to shop around and visit multiple dealers.

Can you throw in any accessories?

Dealers may throw in a few accessories such as floor mats or mud flaps even if they won’t go down any further on the actual price. There’s no harm in asking, especially if you think it’s the best price you’re going to get.

Can I take the car for a test drive?

It is essential that you try before you buy when it comes to getting a new car. Always ask the dealer whether you can take the car out for a test drive so you can experience what it is like to drive. Ideally try both stop-start city driving and driving at highway speeds so you can immerse yourself fully in what it would be like to own the car. The car you’re looking at in the lot has potentially been driven by other people, particularly if it is a demo car. It is worth asking about who else has driven the car and then inspect the vehicle accordingly.

Has there been any damage?

Find out whether the car has had any repairs for any damage acquired during transit and if so, what needed to be done. Perhaps some parts needed to be replaced or part of it had to be repainted? Either way, it’s good to have a full picture before you buy, and at the very least they might knock a bit off the price!

What does your warranty cover?

Before you leave the lot make sure you know exactly what your warranty covers, and how long you will be covered for. Your car will likely come with a basic warranty package, but there may be extended warranty options at various tiers of coverage and price that you can discuss with your dealership.
