Is the Mazda Check Engine Light Important?

Mazda 2 - Jet Black Mica

The Mazda 2 is an excellent car that has plenty of feedback for the diligent driver to track. However, one of the most important alerts is indicated by the engine warning light. Many drivers may have seen this light or been a passenger in a car where this light has been lit. For many drivers, it’s a warning that’s routinely ignored, and this is a big mistake. In this article, we will take a closer look at what the check engine warning light means.

Stay Calm and Evaluate the Problem

Some drivers that are not mechanically inclined may see the glowing check engine light and become alarmed. This may not be justified; in many cases, the warning light is not a sign that your car’s engine is about to seize and result in a large repair bill. If you take a closer look, you may notice that the check engine warning light will be constant or blink depending on the nature of the problem.

A Steady Warning Light

This is an indication that there is a problem, but this probably isn’t too serious at the moment. This can be verified by checking that there are no other warning lights lit and by checking some other key engine aspects. If the engine sounds fine and the temperature looks normal you may be okay to drive the car for the time being. However, it’s still a good idea to get your car engine checked as soon as it practical. Often, a steady engine check light will come on because the car believes that the fuel is not being burned correctly. The cause of this could be an untightened fuel cap, a spark plug issue or a faulty oxygen sensor.

A Blinking Warning Light

This is a more serious warning sign that there is an issue that requires immediate attention. A common cause is unburned fuel that is being dumped into the car’s exhaust system, and this could easily damage the catalytic converter. The car should be driven home carefully using the minimum amount of power possible. The check engine light will have to be checked with an ODB2 diagnostic scanner that will give the mechanic a specific code to identify the source of the problem. These scanners can be purchased at an auto accessories store, and the resulting codes can be read on your smartphone via Bluetooth. This will give you some idea of what the problem is before you visit your mechanic to ensure that you’re not paying too much for unnecessary repairs.
