A Brief Guide to the RF Limited Edition 2018 Mazda MX 5
The MX 5 is regarded as the best selling, two seat sports car in the world for a very good reason. While some drivers may want a little more power, this iconic model has certainly developed global cult status and is on the wish list of many car enthusiasts. So, it is always exciting when Mazda launch a special or limited edition. The RF Limited is a fantastic example of this, offering additional power and new styling touches making it a driver’s special.
The Enhancement Package
There are a number of enhancements over the standard RF GT that include four piston Brembo calipers, a strut brace, 17 inch BBS alloys, gas filled Bilstein dampers, Recaro sports seats and the spoilers that are included in the Kuroi sport pack priced at $4217.
The US market has a similar offering; the Club BBS Pack, but this is only in roadster form.
The same four cylinder, 2.0 litre petrol engine supplying 118 kW offered with the regular RF is also used for this limited edition. This is only available as a manual, with an automatic transmission not offered with this limited edition model.
The Driver Experience
The upgraded suspension on this Mazda MX 5 transforms the driver experience. It is not only firmer, but the Bilstein setup ensures the ride remains compliant on even bumpier roads. The increased stiffness also allows you to hook in more confidently for well controlled roll in tight corners.
The Brembos add greater certainty for late braking, and Mazda says that the potential for brake fade will be reduced by as much as 26 percent. The Recaro seats ensure that you are held firmly and comfortably in place throughout any dynamic maneuvering. While the seats are not aggressively bolstered, they do provide additional support, so you feel comfortable after even a full day of driving.
The Limited Edition Numbers
While this new Mazda MX 5 variant does offer superb ride and handling, the numbers are strictly limited. The Australian availability is limited to just 100 units, with seven of this number being reserved for press cars. These will eventually be sold, but you’ll need to be prepared for a fight unless you act quickly.
The RF LE is sure to appeal to anyone who wants a manual new Mazda MX 5 that they can throw around the track or the hills without sacrificing drive comfort and enjoyment.
