The Mazda CX-5 Touring AWD vs. The Volkswagen Tiguan 132TSI Comfortline

>Expectation from the 2018 Mazda 2

When they are looking for a Mazda CX-5 for sale, Perth based drivers will notice that there is a lot of competition in the segment. One of the CX-5’s fiercest rivals is the new 2018 VW Tiguan 132TSI.  These two medium SUVs are evenly matched, but the CX-5 has always led the way in Australian sales. In this article, we will compare the CX-5 Touring and the Tiguan 132TSI Comfortline so that you can make an informed purchasing decision.

Daily Urban Usage

One of the main factors for drivers choosing an SUV is the ability to use it for soft or off roading adventures. In truth, many drivers rarely take these vehicles off road, and they often become large urban commuting vehicles. Off road performance figures are easily found online, and they will not be the focus of this comparison. Instead, we will look more closely at how these two SUVs stack up against each other on a daily basis in an urban environment.

The Mazda CX-5 Touring AWD

This medium SUV sits right in the middle of the range with plenty of standard equipment, such as automatic LED headlights, a 7‚ÄĚ screen with MZD Connect, a digital DAB+ radio, satellite navigation, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, a proximity key with push button start, blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, powered mirrors, a HUD, traffic sign recognition and 17‚ÄĚ alloy wheels. This model is powered by a 2.5L petrol four cylinder engine that generates 140 kW of power and 252 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a six speed automatic gearbox and has a combined fuel consumption of 7.4L/100km.

The Volkswagen Tiguan 132TSI Comfortline

This is the AWD petrol variant that has standard equipment, such as lane assist, front assist braking, city emergency braking, parking assist, a tyre pressure indicator, an 8‚ÄĚ infotainment screen, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, satellite navigation and 17‚ÄĚ alloy wheels. The Tiguan has a 2.0L four cylinder petrol engine that generates 132kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. This is paired with a seven speed DSG gearbox, and the combined fuel consumption is 7.5L/100km.

The Final Verdict

As you can see, both the CX-5 and the Tiguan have a comparable amount of features, but the Mazda slightly edges ahead. From a practicality perspective, the CX-5 also has fold flat rear seats to give that extra cargo space that’s always handy to have. It’s true to say that the Tiguan has a slightly more refined cabin, but it also has a more premium price tag, and the cost of ownership is also more expensive. On a daily basis as an urban commuter vehicle the Mazda CX-5 wins in almost every category, the steering is light and direct for an SUV making it an excellent choice for around town.
