The New Mazda 3 G20 Pure in Review

Mazda 3 G20 Pure

The new Mazda 3 G20 Pure is the entry level model that comes with an automatic transmission. For many new or cost conscious drivers this could be the sweet spot in the range that they have been waiting for. Despite being an “entry level model” the Mazda 3 G20 Pure has a number of useful features and technology that you would expect to find on a more expensive car. Let’s take a closer look at what you get at this modest Mazda 3 price point.

At a Glance

The build quality on the Mazda 3 G20 Pure is excellent, the controls are all laid out in a well organised fashion, and the handling is well suited to Australian driving conditions, The equipment levels are extremely high for an entry level car, and the 2.0 litre engine is a good performer. Some buyers may find the style a little too modern, but it does grow on you after a short while. There are no rear air vents, and the steering wheel plastic trim is a let down in an otherwise stellar cabin environment.

The Mazda 3 G20 Pure

This is an important car for Mazda; the brand has sold in excess of 6 million units globally and almost 900,000 cars in Australia alone. The new 4th generation Mazda 3 lineup is a ground up radical re-design of a popular car, and it needs to sell well. The design of the hatch variant is radical, but it’s slightly toned down when applied to the sedan and it takes some getting used to. A greater emphasis on smooth curves has replaced the previous fascination with character lines. Overall the design is certainly contemporary and forward looking, and it should appeal to the younger demographic in the small car segment.

In the Cabin

The materials used in the cabin are top notch, the driving position feels very natural, and the 8.8” infotainment system is excellent. Mazda has used their SkyActiv architecture to create an enhanced driving experience that is set low down, and yet you can easily see the road ahead. The interior is clean; several soft materials have been skilfully combined to create a space that’s far above what you would expect from an entry level model. There are metal highlights on the door trim, and the rotary instrument dials have a cross hatched knurled finish. The instrumentation is partly digital, but there are classic binnacles and a HUD that all work well to provide plenty of driver information.

Under the Bonnet

The engine is a naturally aspirated 2.0 litre unit that generates 114kW of power and 200 Nm of torque. This may not seem particularly exciting, but the G20 Evolve engine is paired with a six speed manual or automatic (with a manual mode) transmission. There is plenty of throttle response, and driving this car is a very engaging experience. The fuel economy is a frugal 6.2L/100km combined.
