A Brief 2018 Mazda 2 GT Review

Mazda 2 Sedan GT

The Mazda 2 is not a grand tourer, but it is a fantastic example of a modern city car. The latest variant that Mazda has released is a GT model that sits at the top of the range since it was first introduced last year. Mazda will be hoping to close the gap on rivals like the VW Polo and become the go to affordable city car. Let’s take a closer look at what the new Mazda 2 GT has to offer.

At a Glance

This variant has a fresh, smart interior and plenty of useful tech onboard. The engine is effective, and the automatic is very smooth through the gears. The Mazda 2 GT is great fun to drive, and the handling is agile and precise. Metallic paint is available as standard, and there is a five year warranty and a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. Some people may be discouraged by the limited legroom in the rear, and the steering feel can take some time to get used to.

The Specifications

The Mazda 2 GT is available as a six speed manual or auto, and it’s priced just above the Genki. As such, Mazda is aiming for a more premium feel with a slightly better spec to increase the perceived value deficit against its rivals. In truth, there is no extra equipment fitted, the GT has all of the Genki features, such as: LED headlights, LED fog lights, keyless start, satellite navigation, a heads up display, 7” MZD touchscreen, daytime running lights, front and rear AEB, rain sensor, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alerts, electric folding side mirrors and stylish 16” alloy wheels.

However, there are some fantastic touches included as standard. Metallic paint is usually an extra in any segment, but only the Soul Red colour costs extra here. Inside, there are two tone seats that mix black cloth and white leather in the hatch and black leather and suede in the sedan models. Also, the GT is available as a four door, and the Genki (hatch only) only has two doors.

The GT has the same 1.5L four cylinder petrol engine found in the standard Mazda 2, but it has been slightly tuned to generate 81kW of power and 141 Nm of torque. This is sprightly when accelerating and there is a switch to engage a Sport mode. The claimed combined fuel consumption is an impressive 4.9L/100km. So, you won’t find yourself constantly searching for a fuel station on your urban adventures.
