The details for the 2019 Mazda CX-5 range have been confirmed by Mazda Australia HQ so what you read here is not conjecture. There will be enhanced equipment levels across the entire range and a new turbocharged petrol engine option. This will be available for a very modest price bump over the current model making this an extremely affordable upgrade.
Our Favourite Medium SUV
The current Mazda CX-5 is the best selling medium SUV here, and it seems that Mazda wants that to continue with this release. It will be hard to ignore the sheer number of active safety feature upgrades, and standard fitments, such as automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and new driver fatigue monitor. In the cabin, the long awaited support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay has been added across the entire CX-5 range as an integral part of the infotainment system. The cabin has a new design for the switches and rotary dials that certainly have an upmarket feel. The AC controls have been moved to a panel on the central stack.
Top Specification Variants
The Akera and GT variants will now be offered with the SkyActiv-G 2.5L turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is sourced from the CX-5’s larger CX-9 sibling, and it’s also found in the Mazda 6. The SkyActiv-G 2.5 litre engine generates 170 kW of power and 420 Nm of torque, and it’s available for an additional premium over the atmo petrol power plant. Also, the 2.2L twin turbo diesel and the naturally aspirated 2.5L petrol engines are both still available for the 2019 release.
The Akera variants will also get some extremely attractive Dark Russet Nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, real wood trim inserts, a 7” TFT instrument display, LED ambient lighting, a new special alloy wheel finish, and a frameless rear view mirror. This specification now places the Akera on par with the “Exclusive Mode” luxury CX-5 special edition variant that was recently released for the Japanese market last month.
Under the Skin
Mazda has stated that they have made some further refinements to the already impressive CX-5 suspension and steering systems. This was done to “achieve more linear behaviour, and a higher-quality ride feel.” Mazda Australia will be offering 14 variants with five trim levels, two drivetrains, and four engine choices, so there should be a CX-5 to suit everyone.
